HomeWise Privacy Policy
1. Introduction
HomeWise ("we", "us", "our") is a household management application that helps you organise shopping lists, track home inventory, plan meals, manage tasks, coordinate budgets, and communicate with your household members. HomeWise is operated from Australia.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use the HomeWise mobile application and any related services (collectively, the "Service"). We are committed to complying with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the thirteen Australian Privacy Principles ("APPs") set out in that Act.
By using HomeWise, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with our practices described here, please do not use the Service.
2. Information We Collect
Information You Provide Directly
When you create an account and use HomeWise, you may provide us with the following personal information:
- Account information: Your name, email address, and optionally a profile photo URL. If you sign in using Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In, we receive the name and email address associated with your account on that platform.
- Household information: Household name, household member list, and invite codes used to add members to your household.
- App content: Shopping lists and list items, home inventory items (including product names, quantities, expiry dates, and barcode data), recipes, meal plans, tasks (including recurring tasks), expense records and budget information, calendar events, noticeboard posts, shared notes, and home maintenance records.
- Communication preferences: Your notification preferences, including whether you opt in to push notifications and reminders.
Information Collected Automatically
When you use HomeWise, certain information is collected automatically:
- Device information: Device type, operating system and version, device identifiers, app version, and language settings.
- Usage data: Firebase Analytics events that record how you interact with the Service, such as screens viewed, features used, and session duration. These analytics events are collected in anonymised or pseudonymised form.
- Push notification tokens: Firebase Cloud Messaging tokens that allow us to deliver push notifications and reminders to your device.
- Crash and performance data: Technical information about errors, crashes, and app performance to help us diagnose and fix issues.
Information from Third Parties
- If you sign in using Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In, we receive your name and email address from the relevant provider. We do not receive your password from any OAuth provider.
- When you scan a barcode, we query the Open Food Facts API to retrieve product information. No personal information is sent to Open Food Facts — only the barcode number.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Providing the Service: To create and manage your account, enable household features, and synchronise your data across devices and with your household members.
- Push notifications and reminders: To send you expiry alerts, task reminders, household notifications, and other messages you have opted in to receive.
- Subscription management: To manage your subscription status and verify your entitlements to free or premium features. We do not receive or store your credit card number or payment details.
- Improving the Service: To analyse anonymised usage patterns, identify bugs and performance issues, and develop new features.
- Customer support: To respond to your enquiries and provide assistance when you contact us.
- Legal compliance: To comply with applicable laws, regulations, and legal processes.
We do not use your personal information for direct marketing purposes. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
4. Third-Party Services
HomeWise uses the following third-party services:
Firebase by Google — We use Firebase for authentication, cloud database storage, serverless backend functions, push notifications, and usage analytics. Your account information, household data, and app content are stored in Cloud Firestore. Firebase processes data in accordance with Google's privacy policy (policies.google.com/privacy).
RevenueCat — We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions, validate purchase receipts, and determine your entitlement to free or premium features. RevenueCat receives your anonymous app user ID and subscription status. RevenueCat does not receive your name, email address, or household data. RevenueCat's privacy policy is available at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Stripe — We may in the future use Stripe for web-based payment processing. If implemented, Stripe would handle payment card information directly. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.
Open Food Facts — When you scan a product barcode, HomeWise queries the Open Food Facts API to retrieve product details. Only the barcode number is sent. No personal information is transmitted to Open Food Facts.
5. Data Storage and Security
Your personal information and app content are stored in Google Cloud Firestore, which is part of Google Cloud Platform infrastructure. Data is encrypted in transit using Transport Layer Security (TLS) and encrypted at rest on Google's servers.
We implement reasonable technical and organisational security measures to protect your information from unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
Australian users should be aware that Google Cloud infrastructure may store and process data in data centres located outside Australia, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions. By using HomeWise, you acknowledge and consent to your data being transferred to and processed in countries outside Australia.
No method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal information and app content for as long as your account is active and you continue to use the Service.
If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information within thirty (30) days of your deletion request. Certain data that is shared within a household may persist in the household's records after your account is deleted, but will no longer be associated with your identity.
We may retain certain records for longer periods where required by law, including subscription transaction records for taxation, accounting, and legal compliance purposes.
7. Your Rights
Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the following rights:
- Access: You may request access to the personal information we hold about you. We will respond within thirty (30) days.
- Correction: You may request that we correct any inaccurate personal information. You can also update your name, email, and profile photo directly within the app.
- Deletion: You may request deletion of your account and all associated personal information through the app's account settings or by contacting us.
- Data export: You may request a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent: Where we process your information based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time through your device settings or in-app preferences.
To exercise any of these rights, use the in-app account settings or contact us at privacy@thehomewise.com. We will verify your identity before processing any request.
If you believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, you may lodge a complaint with us at privacy@thehomewise.com, or with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
8. Children's Privacy
HomeWise is rated 4+ on the Apple App Store and "Everyone" on the Google Play Store. However, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of thirteen (13) without verifiable parental consent.
If you are under 13, you should only use HomeWise with the involvement and consent of a parent or legal guardian. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without appropriate parental consent, we will take steps to delete that information as soon as practicable.
Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided personal information to HomeWise without their consent should contact us at privacy@thehomewise.com.
9. International Data Transfers
HomeWise is operated from Australia, but our Service relies on cloud infrastructure and third-party services that may process data in jurisdictions outside Australia, including the United States and Asia-Pacific regions.
When your personal information is transferred outside Australia, we take reasonable steps to ensure that the overseas recipient handles your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through an in-app notification and update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy.
Your continued use of HomeWise after a revised Privacy Policy has been posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms. If you do not agree with the changes, you should stop using the Service and may request deletion of your account.
